WEC 53 to feature doubleheader of title fights

September 27, 2010

World Extreme Cagefighting will close out the 2010 season with a bang and a championship double-headliner.
Officials today announced WEC 53 features lightweight champ Ben Henderson (12-1 MMA, 5-0 WEC) vs. Anthony Pettis (11-1 MMA, 4-1 WEC) and bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz (16-1 MMA, 6-1 WEC) vs. Scott Jorgensen (11-3 MMA, 7-2 WEC).
The Phoenix-area city got hosting duties after claiming victory in a recent fan contest.
"Arizona deserved a card like this after winning the Amp Energy Hometown Takedown contest," WEC General Manager Reed Harris stated. "Fans in the Phoenix market voted for over two months and beat out 30 other cities to bring WEC to their area. Now, we are bringing fans two awesome title fights to Jobing.com Arena."
Henderson, an Arizona-based fighter, looks for his second successful title defense and 12th straight win overall. After winning the interim belt at WEC 43, he scored a submission win over Jamie Varner at WEC 46 to unify the belts. Then, in his first official title defense, the former NAIA All-American wrestler forced a quick first-round tap-out from Donald Cerrone at WEC 48 and earned a "Submission of the Night" bonus in the process.
He now meets Pettis, who's posted consecutive stoppage wins over Danny Castillo (WEC 47), Alex Karalexis (WEC 48) and Shane Roller (WEC 50) to earn his title shot. Pettis' only career loss was to Bart Palaszewski at WEC 45, and it came via split decision with wildly inconsistent scores of 30–27, 27–30 and 29–28. It's just the second time the Duke Roufus-trained fighter has gone to a decision in his career.
Cruz, meanwhile, looks to extend a couple streaks. He looks for his second consecutive title defense following a split-decision win over Joseph Benavidez in the WEC 50 headliner. Cruz, who won the belt from Brian Bowles at WEC 47, also attempts his seventh straight WEC victory and his eight consecutive win overall. His only career loss came to then-champ Urijah Faber in a 2007 WEC title fight.
Jorgensen earned the next shot at Cruz's belt with a five-fight WEC win streak that includes stoppage wins over Noah Thomas and Chad George and decision wins over Takeya Mizugaki, Antonio Banuelos and Brad Pickett. The Pickett victory, which came at WEC 50 in August, also netted Jorgensen his second career "Fight of the Night" bonus.
